Cameron House 09

Strontian

View project description >

New four bedroom house in Scotstown, Strontian built for a local family on their existing croft. The house location was defined by an existing agricultural shed on the site and also a nearby stream.

The two storey house was adapted from a previous design and is focused around a central douglas fir post and beam frame to create a double height space over the living area with kitchen, dining and bedroom also accessed from this space, with two further bedrooms on the upper floor. A fourth small study/bedroom is located on the stair half landing. A covered porch signals the main entrance. The main living and dining areas face south with large glazed areas leading out onto raised external decks overlooking the adjacent stream.

The timber for the large section douglas fir post and beam frame was sourced in Scotland and similarly the roof and external walls panels are manufactured from untreated Scottish softwood filled with warmcel insulation and sheathed in panelvent to provide a breathing wall construction. Externally the walls are clad in homegrown European larch with a slate roof. Windows and external doors were supplied by Nordan.

Underfloor space heating and hot water are provided using a wood fuelled Rayburn with roof mounted flat plate solar collectors to supplement the hot water supply. Secondary heating is provided by a wood burning stove.
