Julie graduated from the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Aberdeen in 1994, having completed a post grad year with Howard Liddell. She gained qualification as an architect in 1995. 

After a number of years in two conservation practices Julie returned to SSSA to take up a lecturing and research post.  She ran the first year of architecture, and worked under the ‘Ecological Design Group’, with Fionn Stevenson doing research.She also practiced part time.In 2001, Julie took up a year long post as full time lecturer at the School of Architecture, University of Tasmania where she jointly ran the second and third year, as well as the ‘learning by making’ timber workshop studio.

In 2004, Julie relocated from Aberdeen to Inverness to join Neil Sutherland as a partner and return to full time practice.
