Following on from a two week intensive training course and exam run by the Passivhaus Institut, Darmstadt at Strathclyde University in November, Sarah Johnston is now a certified Passive House Designer.
Neil Sutherland Architects’ Gordonbush Fishing Lodge has been awarded first place in The IAA Highland North Best New Building category. The building will now be considered for the overall Highlands and Islands Awards which will be held later this year in Strathpeffer.

Makar Ltd in conjunction with Neil Sutherland Architects have been successful in a recent competitive tender to design and construct a small bird hide in Balblair Woods near Golspie on the shore of Loch Fleet National Nature Reserve in Sutherland for Highland Birchwoods. The building will showcase the innovative use of Scots pine and other home grown timbers. The project is due for completion in early August.
Neil Sutherland Architects has recieved a Civic Award from the Montrose Society for the Montrose Rope and Sail Company Ltd. New Factory and Offices. The Civic Awards are made to developments that conserve or enhance the built enviroment in and near Montrose.
Neil Sutherland has been invited to join a steering group to advise Inverness College University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) on their new Micro-Renewables Centre. The Centre aims to provide training and advice for the installation of smaller scale renewable energy technologies as well as advising on the closely associated issues of sustainable construction and energy/carbon efficiency. Inverness College UHI has recently developed a BSc course in Sustainable Construction and the new Centre will relate directly to this course.
NSA have been appointed by the Knoydart Forest Trust to carry out a Feasibility and Design Study into the development of a new Forest Workshop Complex at Inverie, Knoydart. This study will be undertaken and completed during the first three months of 2010.
Neil Sutherland has become a full member of the Highlands and Islands Regional Forest Forum. The position will run for three years. Neil was previously an advisor to the Forum on construction and local timber utilisation. The Forum advises Forestry Commission Scotland on policy development and implementation on a regional basis. The HIRFF covers the local authority areas of Highland, Western Isles and the Northern Isles.
Neil Sutherland Architects recieved one of three Special Mentions at the Saltire Awards on 10th November at The Lighthouse in Glasgow for the design and build of the MacIver House.
Neil Sutherland has taken on a role as Entrepreneur in Residence for the School of Construction and Forestry at Inverness College UHI for 2009-10. As part of this honorary position a filmed case study will be prepared in the spring of 2010 highlighting the importance of setting up a healthy business in the Highlands - which connects with both its employees and its environment. In addition there will be contact with students via attendance at the college and programmed presentations. The students will learn about the challenges and strategies involved in setting up, surviving, and growing a business, particularly in the construction industry.

A photograph submitted by Julie Macrae has been shortlisted and awarded a Highly Commended in the 12th Building Design / Zumtobel Photography Competition; an annual competition open to all UK architects. The subject matter is open, but the competition challenges architects to capture an image with a 100 ASA disposable camera, which remains undeveloped upon submission.

The Inverness Architectural Association announced the winners of their 2008 Awards at a ceremony held at the Eden Court Theatre on 14 November. NSA LLP was awarded the Best Use of Timber for Strathnairn Forest Shelter and also received a commendation for the Shelter in the Best Building in the Highlands and Islands.
Mike Bassett joined the team at NSA as an architectural technician.
Neil Sutherland will be speaking at the IAA annual conference on the 14th November 2008.
NSA LLP received a commendation at the IAA Design Awards in the ’ Lost Oppurtunities’ category for their proposed amphitheatre submission at Camore Wood, Dornoch for the Forestry Commision Scotland.
NSA LLP were presented with two winning awards at the IAA Design Awards, the first in the ‘Details’ category for Tuath North, and the second in the ’ Place Making’ category for Strathnairn Forest Shelter.
